OKCupid dating platform announces ‘I’m Pro-Choice’ profile badge, will donate $1 to Planned Parenthood for each user who adopts the badge

Pro-life advocates looking for love may want to think twice before conducting their search on the OKCupid dating platform.

The company has announced that users will be able to add an “I’m Pro-Choice” badge to their profile, and that for every person who uses the pro-abortion badge, OKCupid will donate donate $1 to Planned Parenthood, up to $50,000.

“Given the new, radical Texas law that essentially bans abortion access, it’s more important than ever to take a stand and we’ve found that our users want to be able to choose to filter for dates who are pro-choice more than they ever have before. This summer, there has been an 18% increase in ‘pro-choice’ on user profiles in the US compared to last,” the company said.

The New York Times noted that OKCupid’s parent company Match Group has its headquarters in the city of Dallas.

The Lone Star State law prohibits abortions after a fetal heartbeat has been detected, with an exception for medical emergencies.

People can lodge a civil action against those who conduct or induce an abortion in breach of the law, and against people who knowingly participate in activity which “aids or abets the performance or inducement of an abortion” conducted in breach of the law irrespective of whether the person knew the abortion would be carried out in violation of the law. Claimants who prevail will earn statutory damages of at least $10,000.

“Daters also want to filter matches by whether or not they’re pro-choice; after all, people with ‘pro choice’ in their profile are nearly 2x more likely to get a reply than those who don’t. Therefore, the I’m Pro-Choice profile badge will be accompanied by a Pro-Choice Stack which acts as a filter when you’re looking for dates; it will only be accessible to users with the I’m Pro-Choice badge and will only feature other daters who’ve opted into it as well. Because if you only want to match with people who are pro-choice, well, that’s your choice!” the company said.

“We expect daters in the Pro-Choice Stack to increase their likes up to 10x; when we released the #ISupportPP profile badge in support of Planned Parenthood several years ago, men with the badge got 9x more likes than those who didn’t add it to their profile,” OKCupid noted.

“The I’m Pro-Choice profile badge will go live for OkCupid users in the US on Wednesday, and the Pro-Choice Stack will become available soon after,” according to OKCupid.

Pentagon Confirms: Two ‘High Profile’ ISIS Targets Killed In Drone Strike, One More Wounded

The Pentagon confirmed Saturday that the Friday evening U.S. airstrike launched against ISIS-K killed two “high profile” ISIS targets and left one wounded.

“Yesterday, the U.S. military forces conducted an over the horizon counterterrorism operation against an ISIS-K planner and facilitator. The airstrike occurred in the Nangarhar province of Afghanistan. I can confirm, as more information has come in, that two high profile ISIS targets were killed and one was wounded. And we know of zero civilian casualties,” Army Maj. General William “Hank” Taylor announced.

ISIS-K claimed responsibility Thursday for the two suicide bomb explosions at the Hamid Karzai International Airport’s Abbey Gate in Kabul early Thursday that killed thirteen U.S. service members and wounded at least eighteen others. Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby said Friday that the Taliban had released thousands of ISIS-K prisoners after taking over the country, which led hundreds to surround the airport where they are expected to conduct more attacks. (RELATED: US Launches Air Strike Against ‘ISIS-K’ Planner In Afghanistan After Deadly Terror Attack)

“Without specifying any future plans, I will say that we will continue to have the ability to defend ourselves and to leverage over the horizon capability to conduct counterterrorism operations as needed. We continue to evacuate American citizens and vulnerable Afghans out of Kabul,” Taylor continued. “In fact, there are approximately 1,400 individuals at the Kabul airport who have been screened and manifested for flights today.”

“This is a massive military, diplomatic, security and humanitarian undertaking for the United States and our allies.”

When a reporter questioned whether the members were directly involved in the Kabul airport attacks, Kirby said the fact that these individuals were ISIS facilitators was enough reason for them to be targets.

“They were ISIS-K planners and facilitators and that’s enough reason alone,” Kirby said. “I won’t speak to the details of these individuals or what their specific roles might be. As the General said, we have the ability and the means to carry out over- the-horizon counterterrorism capabilities and we’re going to defend ourselves.”

President Joe Biden vowed revenge against the facilitators of the attack in a Thursday press briefing, saying that the U.S. will “hunt you down.”

“To those who carried out the attacks as well as anyone who wishes America harm, know this: We will not forgive. We will not forget. We will hunt you down and make you pay.”

Taylor also announced that 32 U.S. military aircraft — 27 C-17s and 5 C1-30’s — left Afghanistan with nearly 4,000 personnel and 66 flights left Kabul with 6,800 evacuees. In total, more than 117,000 people have evacuated Kabul, with 5,400 being American citizens. Six flights are reportedly expected to carry 2,000 Afghan refugees to the U.S.

Pentagon: Two ‘High Profile’ ISIS-K Targets Killed in Retaliatory Drone Strike

The Pentagon on Saturday confirmed that two “high-profile” Islamic State leaders in Afghanistan were killed in a retaliatory drone strike carried out by U.S. military forces less than 48 hours after a suicide bombing by the group at the Kabul airport killed at least 169 Afghans and 13 American service members.

Major General Hank Taylor, deputy director of the Joint Staff for Regional Operations, confirmed during a briefing on Saturday that the two targets were killed and one was wounded.

“We know of zero civilian casualties,” Taylor said. “Without specifying any future plans, I will say that we will continue to have the ability to defend ourselves and to leverage over the horizon capability to conduct counterterrorism operations as needed,”

Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said Saturday that all of the targets, who were “ISIS-K planners and facilitators,” were hit in a single strike in the Nangahar Province of Afghanistan.

“The fact that two of these individuals are no longer walking on the face of the earth. That’s a good thing,” Kirby said.

The airstrike came one day after President Biden threatened the perpetrators of the deadly airport attack saying, “We will hunt you down and make you pay.”

Taylor said during the press conference that the names of the 13 service members who were killed in the suicide bombing will be announced shortly.

“I want to share that the Department of Defense will shortly announce the names of the 13 service members who were killed in service to their country. We grieve with the Gold Star families, friends and loved ones of our fallen,” he said.

Kirby said that the remains of the fallen service members are en route to the U.S.

Kamala Harris keeps low profile after Afghanistan chaos

While President Joe Biden and key members of his national security team have borne the brunt of criticism and outrage over the swift fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban — and the scenes of chaos and carnage as Americans and Afghans attempt to get out of the country — Vice President Kamala Harris has kept a conspicuously low profile.

It’s a far cry from April 25, when Harris appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” and proudly affirmed to host Dana Bash that she had been, as Bash put it, “the last person in the room” with Biden when he decided to end US involvement in Afghanistan.

“And you feel comfortable [with Biden’s decision]?” Bash followed up.

“I do, and I’m going to add to that,” Harris said. “This is a president who has an extraordinary amount of courage. He is someone who I have seen over and over again make decisions based on what he truly believes — based on his years of doing this work and studying these issues — what he truly believes is the right thing to do.”

However, with horrific and tragic images emerging seemingly hourly from Afghanistan, Harris has not been seen in public since Thursday, when she cut short a meeting with CEOs to discuss the Biden administration’s child care proposals to attend an intelligence briefing as the Taliban began their final offensive.

Since then, she has only appeared in still photos put out by the White House. Her only public statements have been on Twitter. She was not by Biden’s side, as she has been on other occasions, when he attempted to defend his decision to withdraw all US combat forces from Afghanistan in a White House address Monday.

As the situation in Afghanistan deteriorated over the weekend, Harris took part in Saturday and Sunday video conferences with Biden’s national security team. Widely mocked images posted on the White House Twitter account show Harris joining the conference from the vice president’s official residence and occupying one of several boxes on a screen in front of Biden, who sat alone in a conference room at Camp David.

Harris’ official account retweeted the image of the Saturday video conference. On Monday, after Biden delivered his much-panned statement justifying his decision to pull out US forces, Harris tweeted: “For two decades, our courageous servicemembers put their lives on the line in Afghanistan. We will always be grateful—and proud.

“Ending U.S. military involvement in Afghanistan is the right decision,” she added.

On Tuesday, Harris doubled down in another tweet that read: “We went to Afghanistan almost 20 years ago. Now, our mission is to get our people, our allies, and vulnerable Afghans to safety outside of the country.”

On Wednesday morning, the White House tweeted out another image of a national security briefing. Harris sat to Biden’s right, wearing a mask and staring at a briefing book with an expression that could be read as pensive or pained.

The image was retweeted from Harris’ account.

Harris is scheduled to end her public silence on Thursday with an address to the annual convention of the National Association of Black Journalists. The following day, she is scheduled to depart Washington for Singapore and Vietnam, her second overseas sojourn after a rocky trip to Mexico and Guatemala back in June.

While in Southeast Asia, Harris is expected to face tough questions about the signals the Biden administration’s Afghanistan collapse sends to allies on the other side of the continent, who are worried about a saber-rattling China.

Harris’ office did not respond to questions from The Post about whether she should have taken on a more public-facing role as the situation in Afghanistan unfolded, including whether she should have joined Biden for his Monday remarks.

CRINGE: Does Trevor Noah’s Tinder Profile Still Say ‘Cuomosexual?’

Finally, at long last, Andrew Cuomo announced his resignation on Tuesday. As The Washington Examiner aptly put it, “Some 15,000 dead seniors and 11 harassment victims later, Andrew Cuomo finally resigns in disgrace as New York governor.” Members of the media will live in infamy for their cringe-y, embarrassing fawning over the Democrat. Daily Show host Trevor Noah is high on the list.

On March 31, 2020 he gushed over the New York Governor for “crushing it the most.” The so-called comedian fawned over Cuomo’s approval rating. But the most awkward moment, looking back now on the sexual abuse allegations, was this part: “People online are falling in love with him because of coronavirus and how he’s handling it. I’m not going to lie. Those people include me. My Tinder profile now lists me as a Cuomosexual.

Given that we now know CNN host Chris Cuomo was advising his brother on how to dismiss and demean the sexual abuse and harassment accusers, this line is also awful: “And the thing that I’ve been enjoying about Governor Cuomo is, in these dark times, he also provides us with some entertainment. It’s not just facts and plans, it’s entertainment. I wait for his interviews on CNN that he has with his brother.”

Noah added, “From now on, we should make it every single politician should be interviewed by siblings.”

Trevor, any thoughts on these comments now?

On October 15, 2020, The Daily Show host interviewed Andrew Cuomo and asked about his dating life:

TREVOR NOAH: On a personal level again, I just wanted to touch base with you as a human being. I last remember you being single, and now the weather is changing, which means it’s going to be a lot harder to go out for a date because you can’t be inside with strangers. Have you taken the time to just at least, you know, have a socially distant meal with anybody just in life? Did you take the time? I know you were very busy, so I just wonder as a person if you’ve taken the time to do that for yourself?

ANDREW CUOMO: Trevor, on a human level, on a social level, nobody wants to have dinner with me. I have no offers.

So cringe-inducing.

UPDATE: Noah is now trying to backtrack on Twitter. On Tuesday, The Daily Show’s Twitter account tweeted, “New York has successfully flattened the perv.”

This disgusting fawning was sponsored by Kia. Click on the link to let them know what you think.

People online are falling in love with him because of coronavirus and how he’s handling it. I’m not going to lie. Those people include me. My Tinder profile now lists me as a Cuomosexual.  And the thing that I’ve been enjoying about Governor Cuomo is, in these dark times, he also provides us with some entertainment. Profile of Mary Fanning Who Contributes In “Ultimate Truth” Contains Stolen Identity

A profile of Mary Fanning, a source in Mike Lindell’s ‘Ultimate Truth’, was finally located.  However, the profile is based on a stolen identity from a different Mary Fanning, where it claims she is the same woman cited in ‘Ultimate Truth’.  It is not clear who posted this profile on the HIVE.

Mary Fanning is the unseen individual in Mike Lindell’s intriguing movie ‘Ultimate Truth’.  At the end of the movie, Lindell talks to a woman who is not pictured who verbally shares her evidence that multiple countries were involved in the election steal claiming the information she provided proved this.

The movie contained explosive information but unfortunately, the segment with Fanning was lacking.

We shared an article where we discussed a man by the name of Dennis Montgomery who Fanning claimed provided her the information shared in ‘Ultimate Truth’. The data presented by Fanning was garbage.  Dennis Montgomery has a long history of fraud and deceit.

UNCOVERED: Conman With Long History of Deceit, Dennis Montgomery, Inserted False Information Into Election Fraud Investigation, Who’s Paying Him?

TRENDING: BUSTED: Maricopa County Elections Official DEMANDED Pens Before the Elections And SHARPIES On Election Day

Unfortunately, Montgomery is not the only questionable individual who has inserted garbage into the election fraud scandal.  Another individual with multiple names is also proven to be absolutely dishonest.  This man under oath shared all sorts of information with Lin Wood which can’t be confirmed.  His handle on Twitter was @JohnHereToHelp.

Why I Am Questioning the Credibility of Dr. Jonathan McGreevy/aka Ryan Dark White/aka JohnHeretoHelp

When we posted the article on Montgomery above, the unseen Mary Fanning responded within three days insinuating that Larry Johnson, the author of the piece, Yaacov Apelbaum, and myself (Joe Hoft) were spies attempting to hurt Lindell and the movement.  Nothing can be further from the truth.  In our report of Montgomery above, we kept Fanning out of it, suspecting she was duped by Montgomery.  Her response showed that she either doesn’t want to admit she was duped or doesn’t want to get caught.  Our effort was to help the team by pointing out some obvious issues in the Fanning part of the program.

Lindell and those near him are patriots giving their all for this country.

Unfortunately, there are people like Montgomery, @JohnHereToHelp, and others who have worked their way into the efforts to expose the historic 2020 election fraud in an effort to destroy the credibility of the entire movement.  It is challenging to determine what is accurate with individuals like Montgomery inserting themselves in the process. We’ve attempted to address our concerns in separate communications but it is difficult to share messages like this with anyone.

Unfortunately, ‘It’s Easier to Fool People Than to Convince Them That They Have Been Fooled.’

The past couple of days we noted some more shocking information about Mary Fanning.  A profile was created on the website ‘HIVE’ showing a picture of Mary Fanning (see above) that is not the same Mary Fanning communicating with Mike Lindell.  We have no idea who created this profile.  Here is the information shared in this fake Mary Fanning profile:

Mary Fanning is an author and CEO of the United Way Blackhawk Region. Fanning is an accomplished leader who has served many task forces, boards, coalitions, and committees. Fanning is in the news ever since the video that claimed that the 2020 presidential election was stolen was released.
Fanning worked as a YWCA Rock County’s Legal Advocate. In a time of crisis, she assisted women in navigating the legal system, which seemed overwhelming. Mary also worked at Alliant Energy and Rotary Botanical Gardens. Quick Facts: Who Is Mary Fanning From Mike Lindell Video? Election Fraud And Everything ExplainedName

— TheAmericanReport.Org (@realMaryFanning) February 7, 2021 10 Facts You Didn’t Know About Mary Fanning
How old is Mary Fanning? Mary is yet to disclose her age and exact date of birth. Fanning might be in her late 50s.
Mary Fanning does not have a Wikipedia page dedicated to her yet. One can read Fanning’s bio and career details on a couple of Wiki-bio pages.
Mary joined Twitter in March 2012, and she has over 21.3k tweets as of February 2021. Fanning has 5.5k followers on his Twitter account.
Fanning has kept the details of her salary and earnings private. Mary Fanning’s net worth is still under review.
Mary Fanning lives a pretty private life and is yet to disclose any details about her marital life. The name of Fanning’s husband is kept confidential too.
Talking about her job, Mary is the president and CEO of the United Way Blackhawk Region. It is a non-profit organization in Janesville, Wisconsin, USA.
According to FactCheck.org, Fanning was a part of the two-hour video that defended former President Donald Trump and claimed that the 2020 presidential election was stolen.
Thousands of people have watched the video and called it a baseless conspiracy theory, and people debunked all the claims.
Mary Fanning went to Winona State University, Minnesota, where she earned her degree in Psychology. She graduated with a minor in Women’s Studies and Political science in 2004.
Mary Fanning is also an author who wrote THE HAMMER is the Key to the Coup “The Political Crime of the Century”: How Obama, Brennan, Clapper, and the CIA spied on President Trump, General Flynn…and everyone else.

There was a similar profile on LinkedIn that was scrapped in July 2021.  However, this HIVE profile is not the same Mary Fanning who communicates with the patriots trying to save the country.

To be clear, we are not sure who posted this profile on the HIVE.  The profile is NOT linked to Mike Lindell.

The profile is based on a profile of Mary Fanning Penny who gives much of her time to support the United Way.  Mary Fanning Penny’s identity was apparently stolen to create a profile with a picture of Mary Fanning from Ultimate Truth.  Mary Penny works with the United Way and appears to be a very good person.  But this is not the infamous Mary Fanning.

The information above was provided by XRvision.

At this point, the real Mary Fanning has not shown herself publicly.  There must be a reason for this.  Would photos expose her connections that she wants to keep hidden?  Is she not who she claims to be?  Who is paying her?

This effort to get to the truth of the 2020 election is not easy.   The media, Big Tech, and the Democrats who stole the election are always challenging our work especially when we are 100% correct and over the target.  One major problem for all of us in getting to the bottom of the election, is determining what is legitimate.

Ultimately, it comes down to the ballots.  At this point, nothing else matters.  The ballots need to be counted and forensically reviewed for legitimacy.  This exercise should be done in every state.

Glowing Vogue Profile of Jill Biden Is Publicity, Not News

So much of what people call “news” isn’t hard facts. There’s a less favorable word for it: publicity. When Democrats rule, news meets a dam, and publicity overflows.

On June 29, ABC’s “Good Morning America” aired several minutes of this, swooning over Jill Biden and promoting a preposterously positive cover story in the August issue of Vogue magazine.

Nobody reads Vogue for hard facts about politics. The fashion magazine, run by longtime Democrat Anna Wintour, is a willing participant in glossy propaganda.

ABC reporter Janai Norman happily repeated that Jill Biden told Vogue: “I want the White House to feel comfortable. It’s like my beach house where you feel like you can just come in and your bathing suit is sandy, but it’s OK to sit down on the chair.” It’s not the People’s House. It’s a beach house.

Chioma Nnadi, editor of Vogue.com, gushed to ABC that the first lady has “embraced her role with both hands, and she’s also kept her role as a teacher, you know. She’s extremely inspiring as someone who can multitask with a smile on her face.”

The cover story comes with a bunch of pretty, posed pictures—of Jill Biden, Jill with Joe, and Jill with precious Biden grandchildren—all by star photographer Annie Leibovitz. Some have designer captions: “Dr. Biden wears a Michael Kors Collection sweater and skirt.”

Troubling family topics—such as Hunter Biden and his infernal laptop—are all airbrushed out.

Inside the magazine, writer Jonathan Van Meter turned to Mary Jordan, a Washington Post reporter, who hailed Jill Biden as “an underestimated asset … It’s hard to imagine Joe doing this without her.”

Jordan regaled Vogue with all the parties she’s attended with the Bidens, and how they let everyone take photographs because they’re so very fun-loving and normal. Jill sprinkled Joe with a squirt gun! Aren’t they the best?

Servile publicity sounds like this: While President Joe Biden hugs a kid waving a flag, “Jill lingers on the macadam behind him in black-and-white stilettos, looking every inch a goddess at 69.”

Van Meter then underlined how un-Trumpy this is: “It’s moments like this with the Bidens—hugging children!—that bring home just how incomprehensibly irregular and out of place our previous president and first lady really were.”

In Sugar Puff Land, Jill is both a “goddess” to be adored and “perfectly calibrated” for “a nearly pomp-free presidency.”

We’re subjected to happy talk about how “countless editorials began marking the first 100 days of the Biden administration, many expressing surprised relief over how much was getting done, how much legitimately helpful policy was moving through the system, how little drama, how few flubs or fumbles or ugly fights.”

To quote “The Lego Movie,” the theme song is “Everything Is Awesome!”

There was no Vogue cover story for former first lady Melania Trump. Three years ago, Vogue instead was celebrating porn star Stormy Daniels (complete with posed, pretty Annie Leibovitz portraits) as a “catalyst of historic proportions,” destined to ruin the Trumps.

These sticky valentines underline that, overall, journalists shouldn’t boast it’s their job to ask tough questions and hold powerful people accountable. Because they seem to do that about half the time. That’s the spin when the Democrats they supported didn’t win.

Democrats pretend everyone’s a Democrat. Vogue pushed Jill Biden on the cover as a “First Lady for All of Us.” That’s transparently false, but the liberal media lamely attempt the Jedi mind trick: “You will all adore, admire, and envy Jill Biden in her stilettos, every inch the goddess at 69 … ”

‘Unbelievable’: Swedish Writer Says LinkedIn CENSORED His Profile for Users in China

Microsoft-owned LinkedIn bowed to China once again when it reportedly censored the profile of a Swedish writer to appease the Chinese Communist Party.

Jojje Olsson shared a message on social media which he purportedly received from LinkedIn indicating the platform censored his profile for users in China. “[A]bsolutely unbelievable,” Olsson said in a tweet. The message stated that “due to the presence of prohibited content located in the Education section” of Olsson’s profile, that both his “profile” and “public activity” — such as comments and posts he created — would no longer be “made viewable” for LinkedIn users in China.

LinkedIn is “the only major Western social media company that operates freely in China,” according to Yahoo Finance. The career-based social network has been granted permission by the communist regime to operate within its borders because LinkedIn has been willing to adhere to the requirements of the Chinese government’s censorious restrictions on speech and information, The New York Times reported.

While LinkedIn did not identify exactly what content was objectionable, Olsson’s “Education” section of his profile reportedly contained a sentence on the Tiananmen Square massacre and the Cultural Revolution, which are topics frequently censored by the CCP.

“We’re a global platform with an obligation to respect the laws that apply to us, including adhering to Chinese government regulations for our localized version of LinkedIn in China,” LinkedIn told the Media Research Center. “We will continue to use multiple avenues to notify impacted members if the visibility of their profile is limited within China. For these members, their profiles are still visible across the rest of the globe where LinkedIn is available.”

LinkedIn has been accused of censoring content critical of China, both inside and outside the nation’s borders. The platform reportedly blocked the profile of an Oxford University doctoral student, Eyck Freymann, because, much like Olsson, a section in his profile contained prohibited content, according to The Wall Street Journal. LinkedIn also reportedly censored posts last month from Peter Humphrey, a well-known China critic based in the United Kingdom. Humphrey “was locked out of his account and saw that his comments calling China an ‘oppressive dictatorship’ had been removed, according to a Bloomberg report,” The Washington Free Beacon wrote.

Humphrey’s profile was also blocked in mainland China back in 2019, according to The Free Beacon, but it was eventually restored. LinkedIn later admitted it had blocked his profile in “error.”

Censoring content China dislikes appears to be a requirement of doing business there, which is LinkedIn’s third-largest market. The New York Times reported that as punishment for failing to adequately police political content, Chinese officials required LinkedIn “to perform a self-evaluation and offer a report to the Cyberspace Administration of China, the country’s internet regulator.”

Conservatives are under attack. Contact LinkedIn at (650) 687-3600 and demand that Big Tech be held to account to mirror the First Amendment. If you have been censored, contact us at the Media Research Center contact form, and help us hold Big Tech accountable.

LinkedIn Blocks Profile That Mentions Tiananmen Square Massacre

A Swedish journalist living in Taiwan was told by LinkedIn to edit his profile Thursday due to the presence of prohibited content.

Jojje Olsson, a journalist who writes prolifically on China, posted a tweet Thursday with an email from LinkedIn informing him that his profile and activity was not viewable in China as it contained “prohibited content” in the education section. The email told Olsson that LinkedIn would review his profile’s accessibility if he was willing to “update” the education section of his profile.

Olsson said the education section of his LinkedIn profile mentioned an earlier thesis he did on the Tiananmen Square massacre. (RELATED: Big Tech Employees Donated More To Biden’s Campaign Than Any Other Sector)

“The censorship of my profile is not because of any posts or comments that I made, but because the topic of my degree essay over a decade ago,” Olsson said in a statement to The Guardian. “I believe LinkedIn is really reckless with its own credibility, when as a professional networking site it is censoring the academic background of its users.”

Olsson told Business Insider that he does not plan to remove the mention of Tiananmen Square from his profile.

LinkedIn defended its policy Friday in a statement to the Daily Caller News Foundation.

“We’re a global platform with an obligation to respect the laws that apply to us, including adhering to Chinese government regulations for our localized version of LinkedIn in China,” the company said. “We will continue to use multiple avenues to notify impacted members within China about our practice.”

The social networking site had previously addressed the question of Chinese censorship in 2014, following its censoring of mentions of the Tiananmen Square massacre’s 25th anniversary.

“It is difficult,” LinkedIn’s Director of Communications Hani Durzy told Marketplace. “We are strongly in support of freedom of expression. But it was clear to us that to create value for our members in China and around the world, we would need to implement the Chinese government’s restrictions on content.”

Chinese regulators had cracked down on the social networking platform in March, chastising LinkedIn executives for not adequately censoring political content, according to The New York Times. LinkedIn halted some of its operations while it worked to comply with the new regulations.

“While we remain focused on our goal of creating economic opportunity for our members in China, we’re temporarily pausing new member sign-ups for LinkedIn China as we work to ensure we remain in compliance with local law,” the company said in a statement in March.

LinkedIn, a subsidiary of Microsoft, asked for the removal of the content only weeks after Microsoft search engine Bing censored certain image results of the Tiananmen Square protests, most notably the iconic “tank man” photograph.

Microsoft has previously denied that it censors material on behalf of the Chinese government, attributing users’ inability to access photos of Tiananmen Square to an “error.”

Joe Manchin: Racist or Profile in Courage?

Bbsrock/Wikimedia Commons

In 1859, Abraham Lincoln related the tale of an Eastern monarch who charged his wise men with discovering words that would everywhere and always be true.

The wise men went away and returned to present the monarch with this six-word sentence: “And this, too, shall pass away.”

So, the question: How long will Sen. Joe Manchin’s hour of power last before it, too, passes away?

What will Manchin make of it? And what will his legacy be?

For, at present, Manchin is the man in the arena, the indispensable senator as far as Democrats are concerned. He alone can make or break virtually the entire agenda that progressives had anticipated whistling through both houses in the first session of the 117th Congress.

Today, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer must meet Manchin’s demands or see their initiatives fail, one by one, in the U.S. Senate.

What has given this moderate Democrat from West Virginia such an opportunity to write himself into the history books?

It is the unique political circumstances of 2021.

For as long as the 50-50 Republican-Democrat balance holds in the Senate, Manchin’s power to decide the fate of the Democratic agenda is unrivaled and extraordinary.

For if Manchin votes against a liberal initiative, he can kill it simply by denying it a Democratic majority. And even if a piece of legislation is supported by a slim Senate majority, Manchin can kill it by refusing to strip Senate Republicans of the right to filibuster it, to talk it to death.

The only way Democrats can be assured of victory in a Senate vote is by persuading Manchin to not only vote for the bill but also vote to strip the Senate GOP of their filibuster rights.

And this last thing Manchin has pledged he will never do.

Outraged Democratic colleagues on Capitol Hill are frustrated at Manchin’s stance, denouncing him as a self-centered obstructionist.

But that hardly seems the case.

Manchin is putting his remarkable but temporary power behind his principles, and Senate practice and tradition, and voting both his own and his constituents’ convictions.

He is placing his belief in bipartisan support on major legislation ahead of any particular piece of Democratic legislation. He is refusing to provide his 50th vote in the Senate to bring about an outcome that he believes would further contribute to the division of the country.

Manchin made clear his intentions this month when he declared that not only will he vote against the House-passed For the People Act, but he will also vote against ending a Republican filibuster designed to kill it.

Manchin is thus setting up a high hurdle for Chuck Schumer: You must round up 10 Republican votes to achieve passage of our agenda items, or those items probably ought not to become law.

We must not use our temporary majority, Manchin is saying, to destroy what the Senate has historically been.

Black leaders have accused Manchin of using what former President Barack Obama calls a “Jim Crow relic” — the filibuster — to kill the Democrats’ top political priority in Congress this year.

But Manchin’s position seems historically sound and wise.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, after Selma, Alabama, and the Fair Housing Act of 1968, signed by then-President Lyndon B. Johnson, just days after Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, were all subjected to Senate filibusters. And all overcame the hurdle, even when the requirement for shutting off debate was 67 votes, or two-thirds of the Senate.

Bipartisanship was then considered a necessity for the passage of major legislation.

Is it too much to ask, before we enact a voting rights law that would strip the 50 states of their constitutional powers to set the rules and regulations for elections within their borders, that significant sectors of both parties in Congress should support it?

In March, the Rev. Al Sharpton threatened to charge Manchin with “supporting racism” if he refused to help kill the filibuster for the For the People Act.
“The pressure that we are going to put on (Sen. Kyrsten) Sinema and Manchin is calling (the filibuster) racist and saying that they are, in effect, supporting racism.… Why would they be wedded to something that has those results? Their voters need to know that.”

Does this sentiment not prove Manchin’s point?

If the senator, who has consistently voted for his party’s agenda, can be charged with racism for standing on principle and tradition, does that not suggest that Manchin is right about the poisoned character of our politics?

Indeed, George Washington himself is said to have told Thomas Jefferson that the framers created the Senate to “cool” House legislation, as a saucer was used to cool hot tea.

No. History is not going to condemn Joe Manchin for voting his conscience and convictions in the face of the abuse he is receiving.

History is more likely to judge Manchin’s actions as meeting standards that former President John F. Kennedy set for senators in “Profiles in Courage.”
