Navy’s Official Twitter Account Features Bald Eagle Wearing a Mask

Twitter users criticized the United States Navy after noticing that the service’s official Twitter account featured its logo with a bald eagle wearing a blue surgical mask.

Newsmax TV host John Cardillo tweeted: “The eagle in the @USNavy’s logo is wearing a mask. China, Iran, and Russia are pissing their pants laughing at us.”

Journalist Ian Miles Cheong also brought attention to the Navy’s decision, tweeting, “Why did they give the eagle a mask?”

Jessie Jane Duff, Marine Corps veteran and former Trump 2020 campaign adviser, tweeted: “Hey @USNavy, looks like China hacked your account”:

The twitter account is the service’s official headquarters account.

The masked eagle logo — seen as virtue signaling by critics — comes amid a growing culture war between conservatives and progressives that risks entangling the military.

The Navy recently emphasized in its anti-extremism training materials that the military is “apolitical,” as previously reported by Breitbart News. A training slide said:

Our Military is Apolitical | Non-Political
 The military as an institution is only effective if we have the trust of the public.
 Our Constitution firmly establishes that the military is subordinate to civilian leadership — regardless of political party.
 Therefore, we are an APOLITICAL (non-political) institution and must remain vigilant in preserving our reputation as an APOLITICAL (nonpolitical) body

However, after a number of military leaders — mostly from the Army and the Marine Corps — slammed Fox News show host Tucker Carlson for arguing the U.S. military was focused on accommodating women while China was focused on growing its military and making its young men more masculine, conservatives decried what they viewed as a bias against conservatives.

Mask wearing has become a controversial political issue. A December 2020 poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation showed that 87 percent of Democrats said they always wear a mask out of the house, compared to 55% of Republicans. Multiple red states, such as Texas, have lifted their mask mandates, according to the AARP. Currently, 28 states, cities, or territories still have mask mandates, many of them blue states.

Pentagon OKs Third Military Base to House Migrant Children amid Surge

The Pentagon over the weekend confirmed reports that it has approved a third military site in California to house the unaccompanied migrant children coming across the United States’ southern border in record numbers in recent months.

A defense official said in a statement Saturday:

On April 2, the Department of Defense approved a request for assistance from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for facilities and land to temporarily house unaccompanied children at Camp Roberts, California.

This support is being provided on a fully-reimbursable basis. DoD only provides this kind of support where it has no impact on military readiness and its ability to conduct its primary missions.”

We refer you to HHS for more detail about the manner in which they will avail themselves of Camp Roberts and the number of children they expect to place there.

Camp Roberts is located approximately midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. It is the third military base that will be used to house the migrant children in addition to Fort Bliss and Joint Base San Antonio in Texas.

The Biden administration has been struggling with how to deal with the massive influx of unaccompanied children crossing the border. Although the Biden administration has claimed there is no “crisis” at the border and the influx is no different from previous years, the numbers are proving otherwise.

The Washington Post reported that in March the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) took in more than 18,800 unaccompanied migrant children — a 99 percent increase from February and far above the previous high of 11,861 children in May 2019.

Fox News reported the CBP is projecting as many as 184,000 children to cross the border this fiscal year.

The figures for migrants overall is also at its highest levels in 15 years. U.S. border agents took in more than 171,000 migrants in March — more than the over 100,000 taken in February, and more than double the 78,442 in January.

Migrants part of family units soared from 7,294 in January to 19,246 in February, and then to more than 53,000 in March, according to the Post.

The number of “got aways” — those who are detected but not detained — have also risen, to nearly 1,000 a day.

In addition to the three military sites to house the unaccompanied migrant children, there are a number of other sites being used to house migrants. Apart from CBP sites, HHS reportedly has opened or is preparing to open nine emergency facilities.

Many Unlikely to Face Jail Time for January 6 in ‘Reality Check’

Many who entered the Capitol building during January 6 protests of the 2020 election outcome are “unlikely” to face jail time — a “jarring reality check” for Americans “outraged by the storming of Capitol Hill,” according to a Politico report on Tuesday.

“What about somebody who has no criminal record who got jazzed up by the president, walked in, spends 15 minutes in Statuary Hall and leaves? What happens to that person? They’re not going to get a jail sentence for that,” a defense attorney, who asked not to be named, told the outlet.

“There is a natural cycle to an event like this,” the defense attorney added. “People will say it was the end of the world, then things will calm down, and they’ll begin looking at cases back on what people actually did.”

The report’s sub-headline noted that the cases “could embarrass the Biden administration, which has portrayed the Jan. 6 siege as a dire threat to democracy.”

The report said there have been high-profile conspiracy cases involving members of “right-wing, paramilitary groups” but the most urgent decisions for prosecutors involve resolving “scores of lower-level cases” clogging the D.C. federal district court.

Politico reported that, so far, almost a quarter of the more than 230 defendants formally and publicly charged — about 57 — face only misdemeanors, and in recent days, judges, prosecutors, and defense attorneys have all indicated that they expect few to face harsh sentences.

The report said the actions of many often boiled down to “trespassing”:

…Although prosecutors have loaded up their charging documents with language about the existential threat of the insurrection to the republic, the actions of many of the individual rioters often boiled down to trespassing. And judges have wrestled with how aggressively to lump those cases in with those of the more sinister suspects.

“My bet is a lot of these cases will get resolved and probably without prison time or jail time,” said Erica Hashimoto, a former federal public defender who is now a law professor at Georgetown. “One of the core values of this country is that we can protest if we disagree with our government. Of course, some protests involve criminal acts, but as long as the people who are trying to express their view do not engage in violence, misdemeanors may be more appropriate than felonies.”

The prospect of minor sentences “could be hard to explain for the Biden administration, which has characterized the Capitol Hill mob as a uniquely dangerous threat,” the report said.

Many Democrat lawmakers and pundits described January 6 as “sedition” or “treason.”

Federal authorities have also cited January 6 as the reason to request more than 26,000 National Guard troops at the Capitol for more than five months at a cost of more than $500 million dollars.

Pentagon officials have also cited January 6 as part of the reason Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered a 60-day stand-down to discuss “extremism.”

When asked by Breitbart News on March 2 about the reasons behind Austin’s extremism push, Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby responded, “Clearly, the events of January 6th and the presence of some veterans in that crowd has certainly got everybody’s attention here.”

Politico reported that Biden Justice Department prosecutors sent expectations “sky-high” in early statements and court filings that described elaborate plots to murder lawmakers, which have “tempered” as new details have emerged.

Rep. Green Stages Photo Op at Capitol Facing Non-Existent Extremists

Rep. Al Green (D-TX) on Thursday took a photo taken of himself sitting on the Capitol’s steps and distributed it to news media to send a message he would stand up to the “right-wing extremists” who he believed would attempt to breach the Capitol that day.

“I want to make a statement to let people know, those who would threaten those of us who cherish this freedom that we have here that we refuse to allow those threats to negate our freedom,” he told The Hill.

Authorities reportedly cautioned some who breached the Capitol on January 6 would come back on March 4, based on the day being the inauguration day before 1933.

“This means a lot to me, just to sit here…” Al Green takes his place on Thursday.

In anticipation of the potential event, the House canceled votes on Thursday, while the Senate remained.

Green also advertised he was at the Capitol via social media.

“I love my country and believe that freedom is not free. Others have made great sacrifices for the freedoms I enjoy. I refuse to surrender our nation’s Capitol to those who would abridge my freedom. Hence, as a matter of personal principle, I will be in the Capitol complex today,” he tweeted.

Green — who was protected by a fence surrounding the Capitol with razor wire on top and National Guard troops — said he felt he needed to take a stand.

“I want to send a message to those who would abridge our rights — I want to let them know that I refuse to allow them to prevent me from enjoying this freedom that I have, that I won’t surrender the freedom that I have. This means a lot to me, just to sit here and I’ve talked to several to officers who’ve come by, I see the fence with the razor wire at the top, there are troops all around the perimeter,” he told The Hill.

“If you tolerate hate you perpetuate it — anybody that tolerates hate perpetuates it,” he said. “If people penetrate it, it does not crawl back under a rock,” he said.

Green’s remarks come as Democrats have increasingly sought to tie protesters at the White House and the Capitol on January 6 to white supremacy. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) said Tuesday during a hearing that those who stormed the Capitol “might as well” have worn “white robes and hoods.”
