Seventh-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada needed six match points, but he finally closed out a 6-3, 7-6 (8) win over the United States’ Tennys Sandgren on Monday in the first round of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel in Acapulco, Mexico.

Auger-Aliassime led 6-3 in the second-set tiebreaker but had to fight through nine more points to put away Sandgren.

Second-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany cruised to a win in his opener, beating Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 6-1. Other first-round winners included Serbia’s Laslo Djere, the United States’ John Isner and Germany’s Dominik Koepfer. Croatia’s Marin Cilic squared off with the United States’ Sebastian Korda in the late match.

Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships

France’s Jeremy Chardy overcame ninth-seeded Australian Alex De Minaur 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round at Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Chardy took advantage of his only two break points of the match to register the lone break in both the second and third set.

De Minaur, who dropped his serve to start the final set, had break-point chances to pull level on each of Chardy’s next two service games but couldn’t convert.

Other first-round winners on Monday were Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Bernabe Zapata Miralles, Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff, Slovenia’s Aljaz Bedene, South Africa’s Lloyd Harris, France’s Richard Gasquet, Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori and Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics.
